The Cult of Me

How Social Technologies Will Save the Story

SXSW 2010: More Five Good Minutes

Andrea Phillips, Alternate Reality Game Writer (Long Island, NY)

I came across Andrea last year while doing some interviews for The Cult of Me and Dungeons + Dreamers. She was one of the writers on Perplex City, a complex ARG created by Mind Candy (and the esteemed Hon brothers, Adrian and Dan of Six To Start). She delivered a wonderful talk about women and gender representations in ARGs (and games), particularly as it relates to creating great narratives. It was awesome.

Michael Adamson, Vice President of Sports New Products and Services, Turner Sports, (Atlanta, GA)

I met Michael through the Ball State Center for Media Design. He’s in charge of developing new products for Turner Sports, which recently has involved examining the ways in which people interact with sports information on mobile platforms.

Shane Richmond, Head of Technology – Editorial, Telegraph Media Group (London, England)

Shane is friends with the Made by Many group (whose founding partner Tim shot a FIVE GOOD MINUTES segment for me). He’s in charge of developing editorial products at The Telegraph, a national paper in England. A trained journalist, Shane became the defacto community manager for The Telegraph before taking over the role of managing the community outreach teams.

  • Two great points at the beginning and ending - "Marketing people aren't great risk takers", and the inference that American storytelling in games pales to European. Picking up Heavy Rain soon (by a French game studio) with high hopes that it hints at the future of emotion in games.
  • Andrea's talk was absolutely brilliant at SXSW + I am happy to have had the chance to meet her. I'm glad you enjoyed her talk here, truncated as it was :)
