How Social Technologies Will Save the Story

SXSW 2010: Even More Five Good Minutes

Tim Malbon, founding partner, Made by Many (London, England)
My friend Aleks Krotoski introduced Tim and I last year at South by Southwest. The two of us are still trying to determine if this is because she likes us…or doesn’t. Made by Many builds custom publishing platforms, creates media on that platform and manages the community [...]

SXSW 2010: More Five Good Minutes

Andrea Phillips, Alternate Reality Game Writer (Long Island, NY)
I came across Andrea last year while doing some interviews for The Cult of Me and Dungeons + Dreamers. She was one of the writers on Perplex City, a complex ARG created by Mind Candy (and the esteemed Hon brothers, Adrian and Dan of Six To Start). [...]

SXSW 2010: Five Good Minutes

Instead of blogging this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW), I’ve decided to record segments with folks I meet with the express purpose of answering one question: What’s the one thing, in your media sphere, that excites you the most. I’ll be gathering a few of these each day. Some I’ll post here. Some I’ll post [...]

SXSW 2010

I’ll be blogging and adding my thoughts about this year’s SXSW Interactive festival.
It probably won’t be live blogged, but I am co-ordinating with the folks at AEJMC try to get the most interesting stuff here. Stay tuned.

So What is South By Southwest?

PaidContent.org has a great wrap up of the conference. Not exactly a what’s-hot, what’s-not wrap. More over an overview of what to expect if you show your face.
With just a little extrapolation, it’s also a primer for what news outlets should be thinking about in terms of their technologies.

Great Twitter/SXSW Wrap Up

If you’re not familiar with Twitter, this post a Global Neighbourhoods is one of the best explanations for how the technology can be used.
I’m always blown away by good writing, particularly insights into where technology can go. It’s not as easy as it looks when it’s done well.

SXSW Music and Media Conference

I’m doing an abridged version of the SXSW Music and Media conference this year, which frankly bums me out. While this isn’t as important (to me) as the Interactive Conference, it’s always very enlightening for two reasons: entertainment commerce for mass consumption online signals new ways that people interact with media that are passionate about [...]

SXSW: Jane McGonigal on Alternate Reality Gaming

Jane McGonigal is one of the pre-eminent alternative reality game (ARG) designers. She was the lead designer on i love bees, the first popular ARG which was the marketing tool that helped launch Halo 2.
She is a Research Affiliate at the Institute for the Future, where she studies the science of happiness, along with her [...]

Mobile Social Network Brings SXSW Keynote to a Halt

Here’s my server-crashing account of what happens when the technology comes to public interviews. It’s a really good example of what happens when journalists aren’t aware of the Read/Write discussion going on.
A brief history. Journalist Sarah Lacy interviewed Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg at SXSW. The crowd (me included) became upset with the lack of substance [...]

SXSW: Gossip

This panel will look at the closing gap between gossip and news as inspired by the social media, where information shoots around the Internet at the speed of Twitter. This should be interesting, as I have one friend on the panel (Heather Gold), Twitter founder Evan Williams and Valleywag managing editor Owen Thomas who spent [...]
